Emoticons: The International Language?

In 1881 an American magazine Puck ran an article titled “Typographical Art,” which included four facial expressions created with keystrokes. Who knew that would establish critical global communication skills for the 21st century?

Our friends in the East keep their faces straight up, while our Western style needs a tilt of the head. Here is how West (left) meets East (right) emoticon-wise:

Happy   🙂    (^_^)
Sad   🙁    (;_;)
Surprised   :O    (*O*)
Winking   😉    (^_~)
Laughing   😀    (^O^)
